This Month in the Garden

Hopefully your choices are made and materials gathered for another month of starting and more direct planting of seeds. Some of your starts can go into the garden now. April is usually a few degrees warmer than March, and some gardeners will plant seeds that others will not plant until May.

Lingering frost danger continues in April clear to mid-May, so we suggest being ready to plant but holding off on less-hardy plantings until at least May 1.

As winter begins to fade and we approach the first true days of spring, March holds a load of work to be done in the garden.  The average minimum temperature this month in the Rogue Valley is 35.9 degrees Fahrenheit with a maximum around 58 degrees Fahrenheit.  We usually grab some rain this month, with total rainfall hitting around two inches.

Unlike the rest of the country that shares our latitude, February is usually the kickoff of spring for gardeners here in the Rogue Valley. Though there might be a few gorgeous days (or weeks), don’t forget that there’s frost danger until April. Here’s what you should be doing this month in your yard and garden (WAHOO! Let the fun begin!!).
Happy New Year! January in the Rogue Valley is a month to lay low as far as actual work in the garden goes, but be busy planning and plotting for the upcoming months. Settle in next to the fire with your landscape plan and seed catalogs or a laptop to peruse seed selections. The growing days are just a few short weeks away...be ready for them!

Provided you were a busy little bee in November, all your garden tasks are pretty much done with until springtime. Oh, wait, no they're not! Since we don't live somewhere that's frozen half the year (like, say, the Midwest), gardening and playing in your yard is a year-round pursuit. Even in the winter. Even in December. Between the cool temps, the sweat you'll break under that hoodie and vest and the satisfaction of knowing you're working off that quart of eggnog and plate of sugar cookies (yeah, that's right, we saw you), gardening in December is a joy. There's just enough to keep you busy in between parties and decorating and shopping. Now, what to do...
