Though we doubt your to-do list in the garden ever runs very dry, here are a few fun things to do on weekends in October if you want to play in the dirt:
1. Plant some fall color! Pansies or mums are fall favorites. Both come in a wide range of colors and make nice bed or pot arrangements. Ornamental kale is another winner, available in wild shades of purple and pink, along with the more run-of-the-mill green or white. (Edible, too!)

2. Divide your irises. If you don't have any irises, this would be an excellent time to mention to someone who has lots of irises that they should divide the tubers and share the wealth...with you.

3. Get ready for springtime. By which we mean plant tulip and daffodil bulbs, scatter California poppy seeds and get any other beloved early risers in the ground. You'll thank us in six months.
4. Plant a hedge...or just some shrubs. When the weather cools, it's time to make your move. One of the RVG "test gardens" planted those dinky 1-gallon English laurel starts last October, and just a year later, the tallest one is nearly waist high.
5. Go shopping! Though it's a bit late in the season, you never know what sorts of back-shelf clearance deals are lurking. Look for tools, gloves, non-perishable fertilizers, sprinkler and yard equipment and other good stuff. Stash it away as a nice little springtime present for yourself.
What are you up to for these warm early fall weekends?
